Solar Capital is a subsidiary of Phelan Energy Group Ltd, a prominent South African based international investment and development company. Our mission is to be the leader in quality low-cost development, ownership and operation of solar PV farms for the long-term. Based in Cape Town, we have built up a proficiency in these aspects of renewable energy in order to realize our mission. With Southern Africa having some of the highest annual solar radiation levels in the world, Solar Capital has invested in technology and land in Southern Africa with the potential to develop the continent’s most valuable energy source – the sun.

Mr Paschal Phelan is the founder and the Chairman of Phelan Energy Group (Pty) Ltd. He is a native of Ireland and has in the past worked in banking, food manufacturing and exporting and investment. Mr Phelan relocated to Cape Town in 2002 where he realized that there was an opportunity within the energy sector to provide solutions to South Africa’s energy and employment challenges. He subsequently created Solar Capital, which in March 2016 launched the largest solar farm in the Southern Hemisphere, Africa and the Middle East region.
HEAD OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Ms Finlay leads Solar Capital’s important Economic Development Programme. Her passion and commitment to bring about economic and social development in underprivileged communities has brought about the creation of several long-term developmental programmes.
Mr Theron spent 15 years developing and executing a variety of internationally located large-scale offshore oil and gas EPC projects before joining Phelan Energy Group. He heads Phelan Energy’s operations for the portfolio of established solar farms as well as develops Phelan Energy’s ability to integrate and manage new-build solar farms in the international EPC environment. He is a registered Professional Engineer and holds an international MBA in finance and project management.
HEAD OF APAC DEVELOPMENT
Mr Comelli, after several years working on a large and diverse portfolio of renewable energy projects across Europe, joined Phelan Energy Group in its expansion across markets in urgent need of low-cost renewable energy. He works on developing Phelan Energy Group’s international presence of solar and energy storage projects in emerging frontier markets. Mr Comelli holds a MSc in International Business and an International MBA degree in Corporate Finance and New Ventures Management.
HEAD OF PROBLEM SOLVING
Ms Le Roux brings a vast resource of knowledge and experience in corporate and finance law to Phelan Energy Group. After many years of working in the mining industry, with a particular focus on legal advice for the setting up and implementation of mining and exploration in Sub-Saharan Africa, she set her sights on the exciting renewable energy sector. She has been an invaluable part of the Phelan Energy Group team since 2013 and, with her commercial legal acumen, heads up the in house legal department.
HEAD OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES DIVISION
Mr Engela is an Electrical Engineer with just over 20 years of engineering experience. He started his career in Industrial engineering where he specialised in Instrumentation and Control of Production Plants. He spent 13 years designing, developing and constructing Nuclear Power Plants, in South Africa and Internationally. At the end of 2013 he returned to South Africa from working in Spain and shifted focus to construction and operation of Renewable Energy Power Production plants.
HEAD OF ACQUISITION AND ASSET MANAGEMENT
Mr Ismail has been working closely with Mr Phelan since 1985 on various projects worldwide. He has many years of experience in contracts, projects management and acquisition, and property management and development, and is currently in charge of real estate investment in the USA for Mr Phelan. Mr Ismail holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering plus multiple certifications in facility and projects management.
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Mr Latham is a Chartered Accountant (SA) with over 18 years commercial experience in businesses ranging from start-ups to established market leaders. Prior to joining the Group, he has worked on projects in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe as well as South Africa. He was a senior leader of the finance team of Virgin Active, during its rapid growth from 4 clubs in the United Kingdom in 2001, to over 270 clubs and 1.3 million members globally in 2014, when it was sold at an enterprise value of GBP1.3 billion
