{"id":3908,"date":"2017-03-22T10:37:25","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T10:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.solarcapital.co.za\/blog\/?p=3908"},"modified":"2017-03-22T10:39:09","modified_gmt":"2017-03-22T10:39:09","slug":"wwf-petition-to-support-renewables-in-sa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solarcapital.co.za\/blog\/2017\/03\/22\/wwf-petition-to-support-renewables-in-sa\/","title":{"rendered":"WWF Petition To Support Renewables In SA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>World Wildlife Fund (WWF) South Africa is organizing a petition calling on Eskom, the national electricity public utility, to expedite the use of renewable energy in the country as part of this year\u2019s Earth Hour campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This programme has been put on hold for well over a year after Eskom refused to sign off outstanding Power Purchase Agreements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dr Morn\u00e9 du Plessis, CEO of WWF South Africa, commented: \u201cIn order to avoid the extreme impacts of runaway climate change, we need to reduce our carbon emissions urgently by introducing more renewable energy into the energy mix. Yet, the bulk of South Africa\u2019s carbon emissions come from electricity generated by fossil fuels such as coal and oil. This has to change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that Eskom has the power to unblock this hold-up, and thus enable all the socio-economic and environmental benefits that will result from the renewable energy programme.
